Aaron Rowe is offering a more nuanced view of the controversy surrounding Ed Sheeran’s Loop Tour. In a video shared Friday, the Irish singer-songwriter said he still disagrees with Macklemore’s removal from the tour but believes much of the criticism directed at Sheeran has overlooked the pressure coming from venues and promoters.
Earlier this week, Sheeran said Macklemore’s removal was a promoter decision after several venues indicated they would not host upcoming concerts if the rapper remained on the lineup. Macklemore had drawn attention after expressing support for Palestinians and performing his protest song Hind’s Hall during shows in New Jersey.
Rowe, who withdrew from his remaining dates on the tour, said Sheeran’s response to the situation could have been stronger. Still, he suggested the singer and his team were dealing with intense pressure as the dispute developed.
The controversy has led several supporting artists, including FINNEAS, Lukas Graham and Beoga, to step away from scheduled appearances. Sheeran’s Loop Tour is continuing with its remaining dates.
